ATHLETIC ACTIVITIES

Carden School of Fresno participates in The Parochial Athletic League (P.A.L.), which was established in 1971. The purpose of the P.A.L. is to provide leadership and organization for interscholastic athletics among the members of the P.A.L. Through this program, the goal is to develop physical and emotional maturity as well as nurture sportsmanship among those participating.

 

Flag Football – Football is offered to boys in 4th-8th grades. This modified form of the fast paced, high energy game of football is offered to student athletes in the league. The game has been modified for the safety of the players by taking the tackling out of the game and replacing it with flag pulling. Additionally, the number of athletes on the field has been lowered from 11 down to 8. Otherwise, the two sports are very similar.

 

Volleyball – Volleyball is offered to students in 4th-8th grades. There are two different seasons for girls and boys volleyball. Girls volleyball season is during the Fall, and the boys volleyball season is during the Spring. Volleyball is played with six athletes from each team on the court at a time, with a net height of 7’4”. The Varsity teams play with the regulation volley and serve from the baseline, whereas, the Junior varsity teams play with a Volley Lite volleyball and are allowed to serve from 3’ inside the baseline.

 

Cross Country – Cross country is offered to students in 3rd-8th grades during the Fall athletics season. The participants in cross country run in two different leagues, the PAL and FUSD, providing them with multiple opportunities to succeed. 3rd and 4th grade student athletes compete in a half mile race, while the 5th-8th grade athletes run a mile long course.

 

Basketball – Basketball is offered to students in 4th-8th grades during the Winter athletics season. The PAL offers 2 different leagues for student athletes in which to participate: the weekday league and the Saturday league. The game is no different from the traditional game, but the ball sizes are different for male and female teams, and JV free throws can be taken from 1’6” in front of the free throw line. Varsity games consist of four six minute quarters, while Junior Varsity athletes play four five minute quarters. These games are played with 5 athletes from each team on the court at a time, playing full court basketball.

 

Sokko – Sokko is the modified version of softball, and is offered to girls in the 4th-8th grades during the Spring athletics season. The game is modified for the safety of the athletes and to emphasize sportsmanship. In Sokko, 9 athletes at a time play defense and each team provides their own pitcher, who throws 3 pitches to each batter. There are no walks, steals, bunts or lead-offs. The game is played for one hour or seven innings, whichever comes first. Additionally, the ten run rule is in effect after five innings. There is a league tournament at the end of the season for both Varsity and Junior Varsity teams.

 

Track and Field – Track and Field is offered to students in the 3rd-8th grades during the Spring athletics season.

Typically, 3rd and 4th grades compete in the Bantam division, 5th and 6th grades compete in the Midget division, while 7th and 8th grades compete in the Junior division. The athletes date of birth is the deciding factor as to what division they are to compete in. Student athletes who participate in Track and Field have the opportunity to compete in track events such as the 100m dash, 4×100 relay, 800m, 1600m, hurdles, etc. Field events vary from the turbo javelin, long and triple jump, high jump, discus, shot put. Athletes who qualify will have the opportunity to compete in the local City/County Championship meets.
